Slow Food Oxon – Autumn update

1/ SFO activities

- Mushroom foray – Ian is roaming through the local woods to find out the perfect spot, yet to be discovered… keep your ear on the ground or let us know if you have any tips on the matter!

- Book signing event at the Anchor, Oxford – 30 October 2008, 19:30

It’s confirmed: the venue, the chef, the author and the book!

- Book Club event : Goose fat and Garlic by Jeanne Strang, with the idea of a pot luck dinner inspired by the content of the book…. To be hosted at Liz’s if the numbers remain modest, elsewhere if you are all keen on South West French culture and Food (the last word being almost redundant!)

- Sloe Gin workshop: not much details available yet but count on Tamara to make it happen, all will depend on when the sloes are ripe enough to be transformed

- End of year events to be confirmed

o Looking for volunteers to organise a harvest event: apple and pears anybody? Your local farmer? Your local market? Let me know, I’m can’t wait to read you!

o The last event of the year – no great news on this front as our host appears to expect a baby at this time of the year – we might have to revise our plan. I would encourage a similar event than last year: pot luck of dishes cooked by participating members, representing where they come from – early confirmation of attendance could help us out to find a venue!

SFO events for next year: any ideas? –

1/ There has been a few comments re repeating the fab visit to the London Fish market

2/ The committee would like to hear about volunteers to help put together the longest lunch of the year with local specialities on the 21/06/09, we need to start asap to gather producers, make some noise in the local press etc…

3/ we had a fair bit of meat/fish events this year, we did coffee, olive oil as exotic foods, we’re about to launch ourselves into harvest mode with mushroom and sloe…

what would you like to know more about?

Who would you like us to support?

Let us know and give us a hand to make it happen!

We are also looking at getting closer to similar associations than ours to get some synergy in supporting local agricultural communities – again, we need your contacts, help, tips and support!

2/ SF UK

- BBC Good Food Shows

o Glasgow, Birmingham and London, according to a similar format than the one at the NEC in June with bursaries allocated to local producers and taste workshops run by local chefs

- Celebration of Langoustine:

The Slow Food West Highlands and Islands convivium is organising an event on November 1st 2008 to celebrate their local food and especially the Langoustine

Accommodation is also available: I will put the details on the website (home page), all based at the Torridon Hotel (10% discount for Slow Food members, www.thetorridon.com)

It could be a great event if you are around this part of the British Isles at that time of the year!

- New staff at the SFUK office in Ludlow:

o Appointment of an Operation Manager: Philip Maile (founding member of Slow Food Ludlow Marches and Ludlow Marches Food & Drink festival). Starts on 13/10

o Development of Fundraising strategy led by Catherine Gazzoli

o New Slow Food UK website to come…timings tbc

- Slow Food UK to create a charitable body to ease funding and donations management

- Slow Food UK campaign: Slow Bread: emphasis to be put on raising public awareness, taste education and encouragement of craft skills (?), with a link to the Ark of Taste

- Slow Food Toscana: build a partnership with SF UK to support Terra Madre communities in the Southern Hemisphere – project under feasibility study

- New SF London convivium: SF Westminster led by Lyndon Gee, ex SF UK Director

- Mapping Local Food Webs regional co-ordinators posts available – see website for details (3 days/wk, 9 months)

- New Slow Food UK website

3/ El Salone del Gusto

- SF UK stand – details to follow

- Who’s representing our convivium:

o Thames Valley Organic growers – Slow Food community

o Will from the Vaults – Slow Food chef

o A few SFO committee members: Tamara Schiopu, Jeremy Rowntree and myself will be present at this 5 day event. I would be delighted to organise a little gathering with all SFO members attending, so I’d love to know who will be there!

More to come soon as this update will need updating very soon!

Kind regards
